Balance sheet

A snapshot of what a company owns, what it owes and what is left for shareholders.

FundamentalsBeginner

Definition

The balance sheet lists assets, liabilities and shareholders' equity at a point in time. Assets equal liabilities plus equity. It shows cash, debt, inventory and how much cushion the company has in a downturn.

How it is used

It answers whether a business can survive a bad stretch: how much cash it holds against how much debt it owes.
