Futures contract

A standardized agreement to buy or sell something at a set price on a future date.

Market BasicsIntermediate

Definition

Futures cover indexes, commodities, currencies and interest rates. Traders post margin, a small fraction of the contract value, so gains and losses are magnified. They are used both to hedge and to speculate.

Watch out for

Leverage means losses can exceed the margin posted. Contract sizes and expiration dates vary by product.
