Bitcoin halving

A scheduled event that cuts the reward for mining new Bitcoin blocks in half.

CryptoIntermediate

Definition

It happens about every four years, or every 210,000 blocks, and slows the rate at which new Bitcoin enters circulation. The April 2024 halving cut the block reward from 6.25 to 3.125 coins, roughly 900 to 450 new coins per day.

Watch out for

Past price behavior around halvings is a small sample. The reduced supply is widely known and may already be reflected in prices.
