Economic moat

A lasting advantage that keeps competitors from copying a business.

FundamentalsIntermediate

Definition

Common sources of a moat are brand, network effects, switching costs, scale and regulation or patents. A real moat usually shows up as high and stable returns on capital over many years.

Watch out for

Moats can erode. If you cannot say why a competitor could not copy the business, be careful.
