Payout ratio

The share of earnings a company pays out as dividends.

FundamentalsBeginner

Definition

A payout ratio near or above 100% of earnings, or of free cash flow, means the dividend may be hard to sustain. Mature, stable businesses can run higher payouts than cyclical ones.

Formula

Payout ratio = dividends per share / earnings per share

Watch out for

A very high yield can be a sign the market expects a cut. Check that the dividend is covered by free cash flow.
