A stock that looks cheap compared with its earnings, assets or history.

Definition

Value investors look for companies trading at low multiples such as price-to-earnings or price-to-book, on the idea that the market has undervalued them. Value stocks often pay dividends and are more mature businesses.

Watch out for

A stock can be cheap because the business is truly declining. That risk is called a value trap.
