Margin of safety

Buying at a price well below your estimate of a stock's value, to cushion errors.

FundamentalsIntermediate

Definition

The idea comes from Benjamin Graham. If you think a business is worth $100 a share, buying at $70 leaves room if your estimate is wrong or things go badly.

Watch out for

The margin is only as good as the estimate of value, which is uncertain.
