Definition
Open interest rises when new contracts are opened and falls when they are closed or expire. It shows how much positioning exists at each strike. It differs from volume, which counts contracts traded today.
Watch out for
Open interest tells you positions exist, not whether buyers or sellers started them. Compare it with volume to see if today's activity is opening new positions.
