Definition
A short seller borrows stock, sells it, and later buys it back to return it. If the price falls, they keep the difference. If the price rises, they lose, and because a price has no upper limit the possible loss is unlimited.
Watch out for
Short sellers pay borrow fees, can be forced to cover by a margin call, and face short squeezes when many shorts rush to buy at once.
