Definition
High volatility means large price swings; low volatility means smaller ones. It is usually measured as the standard deviation of returns, and it is a core ingredient in option prices. Volatility is not the same as direction: a stock can be very volatile and go nowhere.
How it is used
Volatility drives position sizing, stop placement and option pricing.
