Implied volatility (IV)

The volatility the market is pricing into an option, backed out from its price.

OptionsIntermediate

Definition

Higher IV means the market expects larger moves and the option costs more. IV tends to rise before events like earnings and fall after they pass.

Watch out for

IV is not a forecast of direction. An option can lose value even if you are right about direction if IV falls.
