Liquidation (crypto)

The forced closing of a leveraged position when its margin runs out.

CryptoIntermediate

Definition

In crypto derivatives, if price moves against a leveraged position enough to consume its collateral, the exchange closes it automatically. Waves of liquidations can speed up price moves in both directions.

Watch out for

High leverage can wipe out a position on a small move.
