Lock-up period

A window after an IPO when insiders are barred from selling their shares.

Market BasicsBeginner

Definition

Lock-ups are agreed with the underwriters, commonly lasting around 90 to 180 days. When they expire, large holders can sell for the first time, which adds potential supply.

Watch out for

Stocks do not always fall at lock-up expiry. It is one supply factor among many.
