Definition
Float is shares outstanding minus shares held by insiders and restricted holders. A small float means fewer shares change hands, so the same amount of buying or selling can move the price more.
How it is used
Low-float stocks are watched for big moves, and float is paired with short interest to judge squeeze risk.
Watch out for
Thin trading also means wider spreads and harder exits. Large swings work in both directions.
